My mother is someone whom you could call at 5:30 and ask if you could bring a family of ten to dinner at 6:00 and she would smile and say, “Sure, we’d love to have them!
Is there anyone else who needs a place to go? Do they need a place to stay the night?” and she would have the house tidy and a hot dinner on the well-set table by 6:00. She also had four children and any number of what we call the “lost boys” (anyone from the local area colleges, military etc. who needed a place to stay for the week-end to come to the meeting) in her home. And to my knowledge, she didn’t plan for these kinds of events when grocery shopping—she just always somehow had enough and was ready!
I have one child (and one on the way), and I’m working to cultivate the ease and aptitude which I’ve seen in my mother and other women like her since my childhood with regards to hospitality. I’ve often wondered (and asked) just how they manage! The basis for it is to have an open home, and to know the truth that we saw lived at our home growing up—that our homes, our food, our possessions ALL belong to the Lord, and as I’ve heard her say a million times, “If I’ve got it, you can have it.”
However, we are not all indwelt with the know-how and skills of accomplishing what seems to be the impossible (how many people are supposed to spend the night at our home?). Thus, this book. I know there are many Christian women out there like my mother who have this innate ability and many of us younger women want to learn from them so we can carry on the good work when they are no longer able. We have collected stories, recipes, tips, and encouragement from Christian women around the world and put it into one book that we hope will be a blessing to many women, and to the preachers, families, believers, sinners, and angels they will host unawares, for years to come. So please take this, read it, and use it to bless others as unto the Lord!
