These Epistles get their name because they are written to individuals rather than to a company of the Lord’s people. In apostolic times, there were those who were given a commission by Paul to be a help to different companies of God’s children and for a particular reason. These Epistles written by Paul to Timothy and Titus were to such. These were men who were called to the ministry by the Spirit of God and moved with Paul in his service for God. They were men Paul could trust and were able to maintain the saints in the pathway of faith. These letters each have their own purpose and display certain fundamentals that are very dear to Paul’s heart. The desire of the apostle in 1 Timothy was to see that the doctrine was protected. The theme is things connected with the house of God. In 2 Timothy, written sometime later, it is truth not to protect the doctrine, but for the believers to prove the doctrine. Titus reveals that what God also wants is a correct life for God. If the former books would have us to protect and prove the doctrine, now we are called to practice the doctrine.
