Twelve-year-old Wendy found it hard to believe. Her Sunday School teacher was talking about Jesus, the Son of God, dying on a cross, and the one phrase she seemed to keep repeating was, ‘because He loved us.’ Wendy was in tears at the end of the lesson, and before she left for home that afternoon thanked Jesus for His incredible love and became His child by faith. Some years later, she and her new husband, Bert Gray, felt that God wanted them to tell boys and girls in the Republic of Ireland, where they lived, about His Word and His love. In January 1958 they offered Bible study lessons for children by post and only one teenage girl responded. News spread, however, and before the end of that year more than 60 boys and girls were returning lessons. Others caught the vision and volunteered to help with marking. Good work merited adequate reward and prize-nights were started. Winter contacts by correspondence led to strengthened friendships at holiday weeks in the summer. New groups were established in other parts of Ireland, England and Wales. Then, 40 years after Postal Bible School began, it assumed an international dimension when a centre was opened in Canada. Translation into other languages followed and soon children in Poland, Hungary, Korea, Ukraine, Romania and Russia were receiving letters containing Bible lessons too! Today hundreds of volunteers mark upwards of 30,000 lessons in more than 20 countries every month. 100,000 movements of mail dispense Bible teaching and Christian encouragement across the world.
